Looks positively idyllic for January. I just hope those Painted Ladies know what's about to hit them from the east!

Re: Marmari
Excellent find Peter and yet more evidence to backup the theory that this species is overwintering. This has to be one of the sightings of the year!

Congratulations Peter. Another piece in the jigsaw. It won't be difficult to recognise that specimen again. Please find a better one for me tomorrow.

Superb stuff. How many LTs have you seen over the past few years on the IOW, Marmari (I know you saw some last year)?

Re: Marmari
Well done Marmari! I think large tortoiseshells are fantastic butterflies and it would be wonderful if they could return to grace British woods in March and April. Now is certainly the time to see them, when they glide and swoop in woodland rides. A lot of people must be very jealous of you!

Re: Marmari
Brilliant, just brilliant!
So, after several seasons of seeing Large Tortoiseshells on the Isle of Wight, can we go so far as to say that it is still clinging on as a breeding species in the UK? Or am I being overly presumptious? Either way, congratulations on this wonderful sighting. Just need to find those egg batches next...
All the very best,
Gibster.

Excellent
Looks like it has definitely been a hard winter for the LT or was it just a long winter? Like Gibster I'm wondering if this is still a British beeding species?

Re: Marmari
Nice one
I am heading down to the IoW for the first time next bank holiday, May 26th, for a few days, stopping in Ventnor. I took a bit of a flyer on the timing as my opportunities are limited due to work and family commitments so I was hoping to see some sightings, particularly as I was not sure how the winter storms had effected things down there.
Cheers,
Neil F.
