It is that I sometimes get a tad confused between the pair

Hence the head on shot with the antennae tips for ID purposes
At times I have taken Small who have very darkish tips
Anyway, all resolved - many thanks for the swift response

It's the underside of the tips that is diagnostic. I've seen Small with very dark antennae overall, except for clear orange/buff tip undersides - and Essex with generally light antennae with underside tips like those in the photo: inky black.
