Spanish Pyrgus

Post by David M »

Not many Pyrgus on the wing in late April in Spain.

A few onopordi and malvoides seen, but this one is very heavily marked for onopordi.

Anyone any ideas?

That's a strange individual isn't it! But surely it can only be onopordi?

Looking at various photos online there are photos of that species with some of the grey colouring, just not to that extent.

It looks good for onopordi to me. Here is a Swiss individual from April 2017:

Thanks, Guy. That one of yours looks near identical.

I'm pretty sure this is the same individual, confirming that mine is onopordi:

The only hesitation I had with yours was that in onopordi, the discal mark on the hindwing upperside is usually defined internally by a slightly brighter, white bound. This is not really visible in yours. But I'm still confident that yours is onopordi.
