West Sussex woods

Post by Jack Harrison »

There are many ancient woodlands in the Chiddingfold - Plaistow area. A relatively unknown was (is) Hog Wood TQ018322 northwest of Ifold. I would occasionally visit about 50 years ago and recall a splendid clearing with a large Scots Pine (I think it was) in the middle. That was a real hot spot for Silver Washed Fritillary, White Admiral and other woodland species (but I never saw a Purple Emperor there although it must occur).

I recall one occasion when I parked - quite responsibly - at the side of the entrance track. I was given a mouthful from some wealthy resident (stock broker I might guess!) for daring to park near his mansion. He even threatened to call the police! I ignored him as there was not a lot he could do. I returned to my car about two hours later and departed . He was no doubt still fuming as he counted his millions.

Happy days!

Jack
