Second moth from the Spanish Pyrenees

Post by David M »

Here's another moth found at the same location as the earlier one in the lower foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees last July:

Anyone any ideas?

Hi David. Off the top of my head It looks like a Blackneck or Scarce Blackneck or possibly a continental relative of these.

Cheers,

Neil.

Thank you, Neil. Scarce Blackneck seems to tick the boxes!

For what it's worth, a browse through Leraut confirms scarce blackneck. There are no other related species (apart from blackneck) in that part of the Pyrenees. Noctuids are even worse than Geometers - Leraut has two volumes devoted to them. I sometimes find a moth, spend hours looking through the plates, then give up.
