Blue from cypress

Post by OwenE »

Hi. I’ve had some very small very brown blues today at two locations in paphos.

At one I managed some awful upper wing phone pics and only really noticed a non descript browny underside. I was fairly sure they were Lang’s short tailed blues but didn’t notice a tail or any orange

The other site I didn’t get any photos (it was a water park and didn’t have my phone) but had clear perched views enough to make me think it was the same species. They had a ‘mottled’ brown and cream underside very reminiscent of short and long tailed blues but again no visible tail and no orange eye marking

I’m assuming Lang’s short tailed blue (which I’ve already seen this year) but wondered if there was any other option?

I’m sure I’ll see them again and actually have a camera as the first site is right by my hotel but wondered if anyone had ideas.

I know the photo is rubbish.

Female Dark Grass Blue, Zizeeria karsandra is a possible contender, especially if it is flying around the larval foodplant.

I'll second David's suggestion. Dark Grass Blue was the commonest butterfly in the Paphos area during our visit to Cyprus in October last year.
Here's an underside shot taken on the coast not far from the Tomb of the Kings.

Thank you both. Saw loads of African grass blue today with optics and camera and it’s definitely the same species. So spot on
