Wee blue fella

Post by Mywelshgarden »

Hiya guys

I was picking raspberries tonight at the allotment and saw this guy on the leaves. It’s around an inch across on that leaf.

Can someone point me in the right direction of its name please?

Cheers

Mike

I've not got my books to hand but it's one of the Emerald Moths.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to UK Butterflies.

I am wondering if it is a Common Emerald Moth.

There are moth experts on this site who will be able to help you.

Sarah.

The patterning is the same. Found on bushes (raspberry) and it was around 7pm in June so pretty much spot on for timings, the Emerald is leaf green on the picture is this was an electric blue. Is there that much variation in colour in the species?

Yep, Common Emerald.

I wouldn't put too much on the difference in colour, that is easily explained by variations in lighting and differences in the way differnt cameras 'see' the subject.

Cheers,

Neil
