Another caterpillar for ID please

Post by millerd »

Found today at Dawneys Hill, part of the Surrey heathlands. Velvety-black with thin pale yellow stripes, and fairly hairy.

All my attempts to ID online with this description frustratingly lead to the cinnabar moth, which I am 100% sure it is not! :)

Any ideas, anyone?

Cheers,

Cheers, Buggy - I didn't realise how variable these can be. I've seen a Fox Moth caterpillar before, but it didn't look like that at all. :)

As I understand it this is a younger model, in later instars they lose the orange stripes.
