Hello :)
About two years ago I set a challenge to photograph every single U.K butterfly species so far I've photographed around 27 species so I still have a lot to do

Welcome to the forums, Butterflyboy. :)

Yes, you still have over 30 UK species to go prior to achieving your aim, but think of the pleasure you'll have doing so.

Good luck, I gave myself a similar challenge some years ago, took me 4 years to get them all, but I still go out at every opportunity to watch them and take pictures. No matter how common and well known a species is, there's always something new and exciting to learn about them :)

Haha, that all depends on where you live. For most people it would probably be the Mountain Ringlet but you could also say the Cryptic Wood White. Of course if you live in the north of Scotland then the Glanville Fritillary could be considered as difficult!

I've never seen any of those butterflies, at least I was able to see the Duke of Burgundy earlier this year, so far thats probably the hardest butterfly I've seen yet this little patch roped off a gait barrows near the green shed, at least they are territorial so if you see one flitting around it'll probably return to that patch.
I'd of thought that the black hairstreak or "usually cheqered skipper" if I did see it (which I think I did It landed like a skipper and it colours resembled the chequred) then I don't know what it was doing in Yorkshire I only had a fleeting glimpse though. but I know there has been a sighting in Norfolk or the Wash sometime ago according to UK butterflies so that proves butterflies can get anywhere!

so today I went to a meadow not far from RSPB fairburn ings (casleton) where I knew they had Marbled white a species I have been wanting to see for years but not yet seen, but today that changed I saw my first Marbled white flutter before me and fly over a hedge I was happy.
Then later on I saw more, and more, and more, until there was loads of them and I started to photograph them, chasing up and down the hill after them in the blistering heat.

...

later that day I saw this huge fritillary fling around I narrowed it down to two, High brown or dark green
after hours I finally saw the underside it was a dark green fritillary

so yer a successful day I am happy :)

Hi, you Fritillary is a Dark Green. High Browns are extremely rare and only found on a handful of sites in the UK. Unless you're in the craggy Cumbrian hills to the north of Morcambe Bay, South Wales or North Devon it will be a Dark Green. Also your Skipper is a Large Skipper, the faint mottling rules out the other 'golden' skippers around this time of year.

Thanks bugboy 8) I can never grasp the skippers I can only tell if it is a large skipper if it has curves on it's antenae even then sometimes I miss it  , it'd be nice to see some high browns though :)

Agreed. They're so different from anything else in the UK butterfly landscape.

Nice to see you've tracked down Dark Green Fritillary as well. With any luck you should see a few Silver Washed Fritillaries very soon.
