Moth larva ID?

Post by Pauline »

This larva was on my rockery a couple of days ago. I wonder if any moth-ers out there might be able to hazard a guess at what it is given the time of year and the size. It was quite large at 6.5cm. Thanks in anticipation.

I really appreciate your help Allan and being just a 'green' larva was always going to be a problem. It was the size that had me intrigued. Wish I had taken it into captivity. It was at least 65mm (I had the tape measure out) and when I looked up Large Ranunculus it said the size range was from 48-53mm. The time of year is right for sure. Perhaps I'll just have to accept that I'll never know but because it was in my garden (and I don't put the moth trap out that often) I would love to know what sort of moth it would have become.
