That's good advice from Guy, if UK butterflies are your main interest.
That said, there's plenty of incredibly useful information on the species pages of this website. That's how I started off finding out how and where to see them.

I agree with Padfield - the Thomas/Lewington book contains many fascinating insights into butterfly behaviour and superb illustrations - a 'must have' in my opinion. Another highly inspirational book,though not in any way a field guide, is Patrick Barkham's "The Butterfly Isles: A Summer In Search Of Our Emperors And Admirals" Just read the reviews on Amazon!
