Skippers - Small or Essex

Post by SDVB »

These photographs were taken on Hounslow Heath last Summer or the Summer before. I know that they are Skippers, but I am unsure whether they are Small or Essex. Any help would be gratefully received. They are not all the same butterfly, though some might be of the same butterfly.

All look like Smalls to me, but an expert will be along in a while. :D

I wouldn't be confident in calling all of them, but if it's an Essex you are after, 05 is a definite male Essex skipper, with classic short, straight sex brand. I think the next two pictures (04 and 03) also show male Essex.
