Thought you might be interested there is a new book covering butterflies from the whole of Europe including 703 species with 10,000 colour illustrations of which 7000 are from collections.
With subspecies, type specimens and species shown for the first time as well as site locations it looks a good read. Certainly a must for those taking to the remote areas next year.

Re: Butterflies of Europe & the Mediterranean Area by Vadim
It's a must-buy if you are seriously interested in the butterflies of Europe. It's not for beginners, though (no English names, nor descriptions or distinguishing marks given for species), nor for those with poor eyesight, as the set specimens are reproduced very small. The quality of reproduction is good, so they bear scanning and blowing up, but for normal use good light (daylight) and good eyes are necessary! It contains a massive amount of information contained in minimal space and is the only butterfly book I brought home for Christmas because I so much enjoy browsing it. Thoroughly recommended, but with the above caveats.

This book certainly looks appealing from the information displayed. I wonder though how accurate the distribution maps are, particularly for those species that occur in small pockets of the continent rather than vast swathes.
