The Blue one again
The Blue one again
I'm still trying to find out what this blue butterfly was I saw in my garden the other day. It was large, about 4/5cm across and a pale kind of baby blue colour with no real discernible wing edge colour.
Any ideas?

Was it low to the ground or up in the shrubs?
Can't really see it being anything other than a Holly Blue.

Re: The Blue one again
Hi Vawn,
That blue, while turning out most likely to be the European Amanda's Blue was still only Common Blue size.
When I've seen the two flying together, Holly Blues are slightly larger than Common blue and despite the more deep lilac hue of the upperside of fresh males, can appear paler due to the silver undersides. The males too, only have very slight black forewing edges and slight chequering to the margins.
Cheers
Lee

To butterfly meadows, chalk downlands and leafy glades; to summers eternal.

The butterfly I saw was the size of a Cabbage White

Re: The Blue one again
There's no Blue that is comparable in size even to the Small White. Not just here, but throughout Europe.vawn wrote:The butterfly I saw was the size of a Cabbage White
Re: The Blue one again
Isn't the largest European Blue the Iolas? Does anyone have a picture?
Not a likely garden visitor in the UK, mind. I'd say a release from a butterfly farm is more likely, though the ones I've seen in such places (Blue Morpho) are huge.

My own photos and description of iolas are here: http://www.guypadfield.com/iolasblue.html.
Nothing is impossible, and I don't doubt Millerd is a genius
, but I would consider it extremely improbable that an iolas blue should be seen in the UK, for whatever reason, especially so far out of season. I guess stranger things have happened!
