December Sightings 2010
Before anybody gets their hopes up..........................it's a moth (sorry).
The Rowland Wood (Sussex) work party were busy today cutting down small trees to widen a ride for the benefit of Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary. In the process several male Winter Moths were disturbed. (The females are flightless).
This BC Reserve has spectacular potential, but much more work and funding is needed. Even so, we saw a Woodcock, Tawny Owl, Coal Tits and lots of Goldcrests. The pond is home to 17 species of dragonfly and all three species of newt.

Re: December Sightings 2010
The temperature in Torquay did not rise much abov zero today but a south facing stone wall on Braddons Hill was absorbing enough heat to warm up enough for several flies to venture out and sun themselves and to visit flowers.

I refer, for those not present, to the Photographic workshop where John talked about use of Photoshop.
I do it for prints I exhibit; certainly no offence meant.....
Above was 3 separate images with use of layers, copies, cloning and fading...

Re: December Sightings 2010
Here's a purple hairstreak egg above a railway cutting in Woodbridge, Suffolk:

The grey gloom (which has lasted all Christmas) made it impossible to get decent photos, but here are a couple anyway, showing the eggs drowning in condensed fog:

Back to CH tomorrow.

Re: December Sightings 2010
I don't think the water will hurt them, Felix - they would have been laid in July or August and will have seen all sorts of weather by the time they hatch. I'll probably go back to Suffolk in April, so I'll check to see if there's a nice round hole in the middle of each egg!

Re: December Sightings 2010
A much greater problem than the weather will be that Blue Tits or Great Tits might find those eggs.

Re: December Sightings 2010
No Photos unfortunately but braved the shopping crowds in Chichester today to stumble across a young girl carrying a Red Admiral along the high street - presumably to safety! Definately my last sighting of the year - Happy New year all

The wonder of the world, the beauty and the power, the shapes of things, their colours lights and shades, these I saw. Look ye also while life lasts.
