March 2010 Sightings

Hurrah! After last year's shock of seeing my first butterfly in the form of a Red Admiral on top of the 600m Sugar Loaf mountain on 15th March, I'm happy to report that this year's first sighting (in our garden) yesterday was also unusual in that the butterfly in question was a male Comma. He didn't settle yesterday but this morning he was back taking liquid from the damp spot where we've been mixing cement for our new conservatory.

Had a bit of luck today: I was visiting my mother and went to get something from her shed and was pleased to find a lovely peacock fluttering at the window. As there was no way for the butterfly to get in/out apart from the door, it must have been hibernating and had recently woken up. Lucky for it that I went in; the shed is hardly ever used, so it could have been trapped in there for quite a while!

Wakehurst Place, West Sussex, either several or one red admiral seen on several occasions.

Susie, from the markings, I would say that both photos are of the same individual.

Edit: On second thoughts forget the apology, I know they weren't faked and that's all that matters to me. Life's too short to worry about trivia

As a peacekeeper, I think he didn't realise that that was quite an old post (ie early in March on page 1 of this thread) and suspected you were trying an April Fools joke a couple of days early... in the photos, due to the light, one antenna does look a bit like an entomological pin (the right one in pic 1 and the left one in pic 2)... "A trick of the light Mr. Trenchcoat"
Hope that clears up the issue without any embarrasment to either party

It doesn't matter anyway. My pain killers had worn off so I was grumpy when I saw the post, normally I would have just laughed at it, as I am laughing now. Apart from anything else it must be a generational thing,I mean, who would pin something for a fake photo now when there is photoshop.

So, I too hope this thread can continue with it's normal good humour.

Found another large white female in garden, its also a fresh one, it was clinging to its empty pupae, looking quite a bit wet, so I brought it inside to dry off and let its wings dry properly.
