A Swiss entomologist very kindly sent me a copy of this book, after I mentioned I couldn't afford to buy a copy for myself:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tagfalter-suche ... 709&sr=8-1
It contains detailed instructions for finding hairstreaks, emperors and admirals during the winter months, describing where and how to look, all the tell-tale signs &c. Plenty of colour photographs, of the eggs and caterpillars in winter as well as things like the dangling leaves left by admirals.
The species covered are brown hairstreak, purple hairstreak, ilex hairstreak, white-letter hairstreak, blue-spot hairstreak, black hairstreak, sloe hairstreak, purple emperor, lesser purple emperor, poplar admiral, white admiral and southern white admiral.

Re: Winter eggs and caterpillars
I hope it's as good as its price tag suggests! I can't afford it either!
