That was a very enjoyable little article Neil. Made me remember the times on Dartmoor that I've waded through the bracken slopes like you did, and those special moments when you find small clearings of bramble and HBFs
Glad you had a good time and got some fantastic shots too!

Neil.
In the interests of harmony on ukb, you really must stop posting those pictures taken with your “Box Brownie”. All those DSLR owners must be having “hissy fits” after having spent an arm and a leg and their equipment; but of course, they would never admit that your photos are far better.
Hope the film crew in Fermyn had better luck on Friday. I had to stay at home with a gas problem. (from the cooker in case you were wondering!)
I look forward to a similar illustrated article about the Brown Hairstreak.

Now that made me laugh.jackharr wrote:In the interests of harmony on ukb

Or “Box Brownie” owners whose photos aren't as good as Neil's, eh Jackjackharr wrote:All those DSLR owners ... would never admit that your photos are far better.

Re: High Brown Fritillary
It’s all down to technique, not equipment. My equipment might indeed be lacking in megapixels.
But (and I can’t quite follow my train of thought here!) I fathered four children (I presume they are mine; some actually look like me - and are equally irritating!)

If all the DSLR owners on this site, begrudged Neil, for taking fabulous shots with his compact, I doubt that he would of came 1st, and =2nd, in the last two comps Jack.jackharr wrote: All those DSLR owners must be having “hissy fits” after having spent an arm and a leg and their equipment; but of course, they would never admit that your photos are far better

Indeed, to a very large extent, it is.jackharr wrote:It’s all down to technique,
But if someone wishes to spend thousands of pounds, of their hard earned cash, on camera equipment, they may in-fact, never learn how to use properly, then fair play too them. It's their money, they should be allowed to spend it as they wish. Half the fun of DSLR photography, is just owning, and using the stuff, boys toys and all that.

Jack - you're a very naughty man!
Yes, we had better luck with the filming on Friday, but unfortunately the cameraman was late, missing the footage he SHOULD have got of 3 PEs on our baits. At one point I had one on the deck, one on my finger and one on my boot, as I shuffled over to get my mobile to tell em to hurry up! Will post some stuff on Purple Empire tonight and a couple of pics on the PE sightings thread here.

Sums it up very well; indeed, a bit like one of my sons. We offered to buy him a (Volkswagen designed) Skoda. “Wouldn’t be seen dead in one of those. They’d laugh at me in a Skoda”. So he got cash instead and bought a car with more “kudos” that has turned out to be a real liability.Half the fun of DSLR photography, is just owning, and using the stuff, boys toys and all that.
Fortunately, he is beginning to realise that “image” isn’t quite so important after all.
Mind you, I do wish that the auto-focus on my Box Brownie (Canon A650) worked better. It is very hit and miss, often as not “miss”.
(Anyone know what sort of Carpet Moth this is?)

Royal Mantle (Catarhoe cuculata), a nice moth.
