These pics of plants/flowers. Taken on the semi-arid Maltese island of Comino, where there is a "maquis" vegetation.

One photo shows distinctive seed head plus an umbelliferous plant approx 50 cms tall with flowers/seeds above.

In the other picture, yellow flowers are daisy-like (compositae) but the leaves are succulent for water retention. About 80 cms tall.

I/Ds if possible please. HEIGHTS are guesses from MEMORY and may be inaccurate.

Ahhh, I just love the spring, everything so new and fresh. My favourite spring flower, if I had to choose, would be magnolia blossom - so perfect!!

On a slightly different note, I found a couple of free border on the photo magazine that I subscribe to and tried them out, not for the purist I suppose but what do others think?? I quite like the effects for flowers

Hi Shirley,

Glad you liked the pics, I like to try out anything I see!!! The geranimums are all from my garden, I have about 200 different ones, obsessive I know!!!

The magazine I subscribe to is Digital Photo. I find the magazine really informative with some good tips covering a range of items, from taking photo's to using software. The software they give instructions for is usually Paintshop Pro or Adobe Photoshop - I use photoshop Elements 5 but also have CS3. I'm no software expert but the instructions are always nice and clear in the magazine and you also get tutorials, free frames and sample pictures to try everything out on a CD.

I went to the local shops today, and was surprised to see an Oak tree in flower
It was bitterly cold with a good breeze blowing the little flowers about. (No purple hairstreak, i've checked)
On the way home I saw Daffodils in flower in a garden. Very odd!

Christmas is coming but will there be any berries left after the Blackbirds have finished, they were in the tree have a gorge to-day.

Spring is coming, the Snowdrops have been up for a while. The Iris' in the pots are making an appearence and two little crocus's have opened in the sun.

In local meadows, (clay on top of chalk), there are good colonies of violets. Approximately half are white or faintly tinged purple. Size 10 - 12 mms. I think it is sweet violet, Viola Odorata but I can detect no scent. Is my i/d correct?

I notice the white ones have violet spurs. According to my flora this is characteristic of the Sweet Violet.

I think this "solar dish" is Wild Cherry (21st March). Trees are around 5 - 6 metres tall.

I think we should stick to wild flowers and not include hightly-modified cultivated ones.

Which Prunus?

This species is showing well in the hedges. Small trees, perhaps 8 metres high with leaf bud break just occurring. I think these are Wild Cherry (aka Gean) Prunus avium. There are other similar bushes, but much shorter (3 metres) with buds not yet open, I believe to be Blackthorn (aka Sloe) Prunus spinosa.
Is anyone able to confirm my thoughts?
