Supporting nature and the environment doesn't make anyone rich quick, and it would appear that money set aside for doing this is considered an acceptable source to divert to service 'priorities':

This is why society will never tackle the increasing environmental crisis we are all facing.
All this talk of limiting global temperature rises to a cosmetic figure is doomed to fail.
So pleased I won't see the latter half of this century.

I had seen that already. Absolute shocker. I'm sure some clever lawyer could argue about 'ring-fenced budgets'.
But of course, you can't get something for nothing. Local authority income is insufficient to allow minor roads to be maintained, so I pay for damage to car suspension, ruined tyres, etc. I am sure if Council Tax were increased (I currently pay £110 per month) then I would have to spend less on all those other things: that would be a win-win and might even leave some spare money for environmental conservation.
