Skipper ID please

Post by richard58 »

I hope someone can help me with skipper ID please.

I am continuing to struggle with these wee orange beasts :? :? :?

I believe that the first photo is a Large Skipper but are the remainder Small Skippers or Essex Skippers or some of each?

All photos were taken on 23rd June at the same location in Laindon, Essex.

Hi. The first one is indeed a large Skipper. The rest are mostly impossible to ID since they are females and therefore we need to see the underside of the tip of the antennae to be 100%. The exception being image number 5 which is a male Essex Skipper (the scent brand is visible) and the final 2 images which looks like female Small Skippers from what we can see of the antennae :)

Hi bugboy .... belated thanks for your ID suggestions. I have been away for a few days .... a Black-browed Albatross at Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire was a little larger and much easier to identify than tiny, fast-flying orange-brown butterflies
