Hi All,
Couple of interesting insects on the chrysanthemums at work today.
I've been doing a bit better with moth IDs lately (or put another way, I've been more fortunate with Google images and/or the Sussex Moth Group's what's flying tonight feature), but I'm struggling to find a match for this one. It's one of those with a bit of a fox's head and had an orangey colour in the early morning light that alerted me to it. Size wise a small macro moth.
The other one was a bit of a character. It knew I was there and made a laboured-looking effort to move down to a slightly lower leaf, had a bit of a look at me and then made a laboured-looking effort to climb back up again. It then flew to another leaf about an inch away. It reminded me a bit of an owl with his colouration/markings and big head and eyes. A lot going on with the mouth gear, which from above looked like a trident.
I then left both of them in peace.
Any help with ID'ing either or both very much appreciated.
Cheers as always.

The moth is Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix - Pandemis corylana.

Second looks like one of the Curculio sp weevils.

Thanks Matsukaze, Aeshna.
I've just had a look at the What's Flying Tonight feature on the Sussex Moth Group and the Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix came in at 69th most common out of 497 species for last night. For tonight it would be 52nd out of 461 recorded species. They show pictures for the top 30. I suppose it may be a bit cheeky of me to ask if they could extend pictures to the top 100 just for my personal education
I've had a look at the Curculio weevils and agree with you Aeshna.....nucum looks pretty adjacent to me. I haven't really noticed weevils before (certainly not this type at least), so will need to keep my eyes open for these too now.
Brilliant service as always. Cheers !
