Northern Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2020
Week 11
I hope one and all had a very enjoyable Christmas (single) Day? If you did great, if you didn’t don’t worry the Favourites Thread is here again to raise your spirits. Just think this time next week 2020 will finally have passed and we’ll all be looking ahead to 2021!
Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.
Just a reminder - it might be a good idea to select your Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2020 now so that you’ve got something to post when the series of threads culminates in 20 weeks time…
Have a goodun and stay safe

Northern Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2020
Re: Northern Brown Argus - Favourite Photo of 2020
The NBA was a first for me this year. With the kind help of Jack Harrison I managed to visit a site in Grantown on Spey on 18th July. All photos were taken on that day.

Fabulous images - envy inducing, even.
I have yet to see this form with the defining white spots. I think 'Scotch Argus' is better applied to this species than aethiops in all honesty.

Better still to call it Nicola's Argus (but take great care with the spelling of Argus otherwise the auto spell corrector might get the wrong idea!)I think 'Scotch Argus' is better applied to this species....

No need, Jack. Thankfully, that is a transient feature, although I take your point regarding the spelling of the latter.

Didn't see any homespun NBAs in 2020, but they are always present in the mountainous regions of the continent, and I saw the montensis form in Spain in August as well as the nominate form in the French Alps in early July:

Due to travel restrictions I was completely unable to look at any of the inland colonies during 2020. On the coast however I indulged in a few of the more intimate NBA sites dotted along the coast between Eyemouth and Burnmouth on the Berwickshire, South East Scotland coastline. This grand specimen was one of many on a hot sunny day on the 1st of June.

Lovely specimen, Iain. There's even a 'brassy' veneer to the wings.
