Thanks Guy.Although this is not a butterfly, this fly was seen at the same time-do you know if this is mites on the fly and is this normal? Jim

Cloudy so the winged wonders were uncooperative ,however my first Gatekeeper seen.
(Pyronia tithonus) ,
Female ? Large Skipper,
Speckled Wood a Moth for identification, a scary looking insect perhaps someone can put a name to it, and a Dragon, ditto..

The scary looking insect is a scorpionfly.

Your Dragonfly is a Southern Hawker ,and your moth Marbled White spot (rather worn !) protedeltote Pygarga.

Thank you both for your input.
I managed to find another scorpionfly, picture showing its scorpion like tail.
Good numbers of Ringlets along the old Somerset and Dorset Railway line track.
