My mystery butterfly - can anyone help with identification?
During the lockdown, my wife and I have been taking our exercise by walking in the hills and woods behind our house in rural Perthshire. We've come across lots of new wildlife, not just butterflies, though the ones we've spotted (photos in a separate post) have all been fairly easy to identify. Except for one! Can anyone identify this chap? Small, about the same size as a Small Heath, or Orange Tip. Nearest thing I can see would be a female Orange Tip, but we have lots of them here, and this one doesn't look at all like them..... Sorry the photos are not the best. Spots are a dark brown.

Thanks Maurice. Not yellow though, definitely white.

Definitely a Speckled Yellow. They are day flying moths and often appear a very pale yellow, especially when a bit faded.
Cheers,
Neil.

Thanks Neil, mystery solved! Perhaps it's the Albicans flavour - the Wikipedia entry says "ab. albicans Ob. has the ground-colour whitish."
