Western Dappled White?

Post by stewartvm »

Out with the dog this evening in Mid Lincolnshire UK and saw this in the hedgerow taking a fancy to the daisies. I haven't been able to identify but google suggested Euchloe Crameri. The pictures aren't great from my phone. Very pretty anyway, is it a common spot in the UK?

Thanks for any help.

Historically there have been migrant Bath Whites (a similar species) turn up in the UK, but not for many years. Given the current weather conditions, the East Coast would be favoured for unusual continental migrants, so this cannot be ruled out. Bath White distribution extends to the North Sea coast of Europe, whereas (and others will correct me if I'm wrong!) I don't think that of the Western Dappled White does.

Whichever it is, it would be a terrific record! Can you post a photo (however good or bad it is) - with that to look at, anything commoner can probably be ruled out, like a female Orange Tip for example.

Cheers,

I think Google may have got a little excited and over reached a bit. Whilst not beyond the bounds of possibility (and the recent hot weather with southerly winds might increase the chances a bit), there's only 4 records of the Dappled White in the UK.... ever! Have a look at the female Orange-tip which is common and widespread and currently coming to the end of it's flight period. Don't worry about how poor you think the pictures you got are, anything is worth while, particularly if it IS a Dappled White where pictures would be almost essential for a report to be validated.

Thank you @bugboy and sorry to disappoint anyone else, but yes - it is a female orange tip. Google was indeed over excited! Still very beautiful and the first time I've seen one to notice. Thanks again.
