Bird for ID

Whilst at West Williamston in Pembrokeshire on Thursday, I noticed a bird I'd never seen before in the estuary.

I'm not great with birds, although it looks like some kind of egret to me.

Does anyone know the species?

Thank you both for your comments, a little off the subject of butterflies,we have on the Somerset levels five members of the Heron family now well established and even a Night Heron has bred, not forgetting the butterflies, Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia), White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) , Purple Hairstreak (Favonius quercus) along with the more common members of the Nymphalidae - "aristocrats" can bee seen.

I take it Medard you are James Gibbs? If not, I am giving my praises to the wrong person.

The photos are in a class of their own. The birds in flight are just amazing. And your Somerset pictures – especially early morning mist - manage to capture the atmosphere superbly. Mind you, to stop you becoming too conceited, there are one or two (just one or two) that don’t quite come up to the general standard. But you set the level so high, that I suppose is inevitable.

I’m not planning to give up taking my own photos but seeing your images does make me wonder. No, I’ll learn by studying your methods.
