ID for spider...

Post by David M »

Along with butterflies/moths, I occasionally get sent requests for IDs on other creatures. This one is quite a mean looking critter.

I've never seen a spider like this. It was taken in Cheshire earlier this year.

Anyone got any ideas?

Definitely Araneus and quadratas was my instinctive first stab although I am sat on a train right now. It is a very variable species though, particularly with regards to the ground colour.

Allan/BB, many thanks for your input. Your suggested spider seems to tick all the boxes!
