Re: Stained glass butterfly panel
It is although it has a very restricted distribution, the UK subspecies is only found in the Norfolk fens. The continental race is widespread and relatively common and does sometimes cross the channel, so occasionally turns up in Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset.
Some addictions are good for the soul!
Re: Stained glass butterfly panel
It looks like a large wingspan? Is it as big as it apoears in the stained glass panel?
Re: Stained glass butterfly panel
By British standards, the Swallowtail is indeed a large butterfly - our largest, in fact. You will find lots more information within this site at http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species. ... es=machaon
You should follow up your interest by visiting one if its fenland sites during the flight period. Perhaps your interest in butterflies in general will expand and we'll see you as a regular contributor to this site

Re: Stained glass butterfly panel
It makes a change to see a British Butterfly as a display instead of the usual [rare vagrant only] Monarch.
But yet again, the image shows a pinned set specimen with wings spread out. I do wish illustrators would modernise and realise that collecting/killing/setting butterflies is almost as extinct as the dodo. Sadly, there are still a few "trophy collectors" around.
