Hipparchia ID

Post by David M »

Aside from pyrgus, the other major ID issues I have are with hipparchia.

I'm used to seeing Woodland Graylings fluttering on the forest tracks, tending to swirl around trees and occasionally landing on me (or others). here's one from this month:

However, whilst on a walk in open country, I found this one coming to rest on stone pathways in an exposed location, something I'm not used to fagi doing.

I wonder whether it might be one of the other two close relatives of fagi, i.e. alcyone on genava?

It certainly looks different with a much reduced white band on the hindwing uns. The size was similar.
