I don't know anymore about this, just came across the post on Facebook. I would guess it's an introduction but not sure whether it is just in his garden or elsewhere nearby. Maybe some of the local Kent observers might try and get in touch with him. It appears to be a self sustaining population if he really has had them every summer for the past 8 years.

I'm no expert, but inspection of the UKB species reference page suggests that these are the batavus sub-species, rather than rutilus.

I completely agree - sucking up the time of conservation-minded people and BC. The equivalent of "wasting police time" (not sure what that is for conservation staff though!).

I can't see comments when I visit his page from home or from my iPhone because I haven't got a FaceBook account - I guess I could read them from school because the school does. So what, in brief, was his point?

You're quite right. It is really quite simple to ensure that unwanted people don't see what you put on Facebook. I could go on, but this isn't the forum to discuss Facebook security.

Let's hope the weather perks up soon and we can all get out butterflying again.

Could rutilus actually establish in Kent? The climate is not so very different from parts of France where the species flies, and I can imagine the foodplant being established on Romney Marsh and the semi-aquatic bit separating/connecting Thanet and the mainland.
