A single specimen was caught near Dumfries in Scotland, in June 1866, believed to be an accidental introduction. No more specimens were seen until 6th August 1986 when several individuals were seen flying in Fobbing Marshes in South Essex. These were believed to have been accidentally introduced, possibly the result of a gravid female being transported and subsequently laying.
This species was first defined in Esper (1777) as shown here and as shown in this plate (type locality: Germany).
