Female of Dingy Skipper (Erynnis tages L.) feeding on flower of Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale aggr.)

Not just eastern Europe that's still in the grip of winter. For once, heavy snow has brought many parts of Wales to a halt with the equinox just round the corner:

Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris)
Mount Lutiuanska Golica is still under snow
A Butterfly Census paper and a transect map
Heath Dog Violet (Viola canina) occupies open grassland fields
Butterfly recorder next to river bed
White butterbur (Petasites albus) in Luta riverbed
Some conifer trees on rocks
Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) on open fields, common also on roadsides as well
The transect walks finished. Beautiful view of sunset in mountains.

Interesting to see the variation in dates in eastern Europe, Serhiy. I note that this year (although very early in the UK) is actually 10 days behind 2016 in Ukraine.

Yes, it is not my idea but I realized it on local level. I selected some local bioindicators to determine more or les for start point of year seasons. If we put together long series of monitoring data from own databases then the picture of the each season shall completed. You see it is naturally floating. For me the Orange Underwing (Archiearis parthenias) is the most convenient local moth bioindicator. From the Rhopalocera a Orange-tip (Anthocaris cardamines) selected. For summer time is Poplar Admiral (Limenitis populi), I think.
