Although it's winter here now, there are still some butterflies around. One of my favourites is the Common Jezebel, a.k.a Black Jezebel (Delias nigrina), which is sometimes more common in winter than in the warmer months. We had a bumper crop of them this autumn, not just in Sydney but right up and down the East Coast as far as I can tell. I've never seen so many. Mostly they fly high in the trees, but sometimes they descend to feed.

This is the Southern Pearl White, Elodina angulipennis

This was a male, his upperside is a stunning orange and black, which I did see briefly but I wasn't ready with the camera.

The silly thing is that both of these species are really right at the Southern end of their range in Sydney, as they're basically subtropical species. So I find it strange that they would both be found here in the winter.
