Two small tortoiseshells flying in Gryon, Switzerland (1200m) today. No photo opportunities unfortunately!

I think this is the nearest I will be getting to seeing a butterfly this month.

That looks like a crime scene to me. I can just see the headlines ... "Hummingbird Hawkmoth tragically flattened by a runaway truck ..."
Cheers,

A single Queen of Spain fritillary braving the elements today, at 11.50am on a bright but distinctly chilly Swiss morning at about 600m altitude. Nearby puddles on the path were still completely frozen over at that time. I was just able to get this long shot (heavily cropped) before it scooted off somewhere inaccessible:
Unfortunately, the sun was completely shrouded in cloud by 1.00pm and I saw nothing else.
I would guess this to have been a 2007 adult that 'hibernated' and got disturbed.

Ok it is not January anymore but I spotted a brimstone (first one of the year) on Saturday (09/02) in the Gower Peninsula...
That really cheered me up!! I like seeing Brimstones as they remind me that spring is on its way!!
