Wood White - Favourite Photo of 2024
Week 20
The final week but before the culmination and the grand finale there are the species threads to wrap up…so here it is the final one; the Wood White.
As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.
Have a goodun

Re: Wood White - Favourite Photo of 2024
I missed both the main fights at Chiddingfold, catching the tail end of both, but there was still enough around to witness the famous routine every female has to endure multiple times during her short life.

That's actually a very nice photo, Paul! Not just showing the usual 'courtship', but also showing an open winged male at the same time is pretty special

This is my favourite Wood White photo taken in 2024. It was in Chiddingfold Forest, May 13th, at 4pm on a dull and cloudy afternoon. I have learnt over the years that this is the best weather for WW photos. If it's sunny they just bimble around constantly and rarely settle. The flower is called Herb Robert (I think!).

I don't have a personal photo of Wood white, living in Scotland, but I have this life-stages composite I created in 2024 with the help of photos from Pete Eeles and Vince Massimo. Part of a full set for UK species that I'm working on.

Finding this mating pair in Romania was my favourite moment with this species in 2024:

Re: Wood White - Favourite Photo of 2024
My trip over to Grafton Wood on June 26th produced a dozen or so first brood wood whites still flying, these being th eonly ones I saw in 2024. In all, I saw dozen or so, mainly scattered along the central ride but also a couple down a side path.
These included a male pestering a female but she was having none of it, probably alreading having mated a while ago at this stage of their flight period. This took place low down in the lush rideside vegetation making it difficult to get clear photos.
Cheers,
Neil

That's beautifully done, Chris - really lovely, balanced composition. I look forward to seeing the complete set!ChrisStamp wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 10:37 am I don't have a personal photo of Wood white, living in Scotland, but I have this life-stages composite I created in 2024 with the help of photos from Pete Eeles and Vince Massimo.
