Dingy Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2024

Week 4

What with Halloween gone and Bonfire Night imminent the shops will soon start playing their Xmas songs! So while you grind your teeth in exasperation consolation comes in the form of this weeks’ Favourites.

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.
Here we got then!

Have a goodun

When fresh, these butterflies are anything but dingy... All these were seen in May. The first two are from two separate visits to Denbies...

...and these are two shots of the same female posing in the shade at Hutchinson's Bank.

I came across the species at all the usual spots I visit, but though numbers seemed a bit depressed, they were not markedly so.

A planned trip to Bison Hill 12th May, our first visit to this area and a lovely day it turned out to be, good sunshine and great company .

We were lucky enough to see all the species we targeted even if some needed a lot of finding.

From that trip a couple of Dingy Skipper photos

I saw Dingy Skippers at a number of places this year although never in large numbers. I didn't take that many photos though with my favourite being the first one that I saw, at Butser Hill/Rake Bottom during a few days down that way to visit our daughter in early May.

Like Neil, my favourite is also the first one I saw in 2024, on 10th May at Cwm Ivy:

Dingy Skipper

This was taken on the ‘back to front weather’ day. I had to take the family to Ikea but as it was only a quick trip I managed to wangle half of the day for some butterflies. As the weather report said it was going to start great and then get worse I drove over to Martin Down first thing…Only it wasn’t great, it was grey, it was blowy, there was damp in the air and it was cold! Luckily I found some skippers and Small Blues roosting of which this was by far my favourite on the day, and for the whole season as it turned out. I’d been trying for the camouflaged roosting shot like this for a while and so when I (eventually) spotted this individual I was made up. Of course as I drove towards Southampton the wind dropped, it dried out and the sun came out!

The single brooded spring species seemed to (mostly) do ok this year. These guys turned up in most the places I expected them to appear in. This pair made a welcome addition to a trip to Warminster to find some Marsh Fritillaries.

My favourite is this fresh looking Dingy Skipper catching the early morning sunshine. This was taken whilst walking to work on 24th May 2024.
