Small White - Favourite Photo of 2020
Week 18
The end of the Favourites thread is in sight but don’t be too down as with double figure temperatures forecast from mid-week on it looks like the 2021 season could soon be underway!
Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.
Just a reminder - it might be a good idea to start selecting your Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2020 now as we’re starting to draw to the grand finale.

I rather liked this male Small White resting amongst the foliage of wild clematis.

Small White seemed to have a good 2020 with a reasonable spring emergence and then loads flying around here later in the summer.
Cheers,
Neil.

A specimen of each gender taken from Port Eynon, Gower, during the latter half of August when they were especially numerous:

Small White
This species was my first for the year in 2020 getting the ball rolling in February and as I was trawling backwards through my images that butterfly was the main contender for my Favourite. However I then reached April and that’s when this little beauty turned up. It immediately took me back to mid Lockdown 1.0 and a fantastic hour (or so) of exercise when Orange-tips and Specklies filled my memory card along with a very amiable Holly Blue. Whilst Miss Holly Blue may have been the star of the show this male Small White had been nominated and in the end easily won Best Supporting Actor. The lighting was just right so as to make the butterfly pop on the screen but not bleach and the spot on the fore wing is almost non-existent being composed of but a handful of scales. I don’t think I got a better image of a Small White all year and so it proved when I carried on my backwards search of my images- hence its selection for My Fave…

I've opted for this Small White taken in a lavender field in Hampshire, in between lockdowns when we could travel a little bit.
This other colourful image was taken the same day in the garden.

To butterfly meadows, chalk downlands and leafy glades; to summers eternal.
