How Caterpillar Hairs might help socially grouped larvae

It was thought that long hairs of caterpillars, helped them social distance.
Here, Spring brooded Pieris brassicae larvae, eating Garlic Mustard seedpods, avoided climbing over each other and used out of choice, the opposite side of a stem for social movement.
