No Alan you don't have the same IP address as Barryj, you can't even get that right. But you do have the same IP address as someone else, who for the moment will remain nameless. I also find it a little too much of a coincidence, that the only votes a that that certain someone has, are from you, at the same IP address, IE same house, and from your Son.



When someone encourages friends to join this forum, just so they can vote for them in the competitions, It makes a farce of the whole thing. For their other two votes, usually end up effecting the overall outcome of the competition.

I helped run a Large flying insect day at Danebury Hill today. Most butterflies weren't too active because of the strong winds, but the Painted Lady numbers . At one point there was a knapweed plant with 8 flowers, and a Painted Lady on each.

While talking to Mervyn, the other guy leading the walk, I said, won't this lot ( the Painted Lady's ) want to breed, and if so, might they all b####r off, as the numbers are to high.

100 Painted Lady's seen on transect today. And to answer my own question, the vast majority were nectaring, but out in the open fields, 15 were passed by me in a great hurry, heading North. With the strong SW wind, these individuals could well have just crossed over from France.

If you stand and look South from the trig point at Danebury, you can see the Isle of White. For a PL with a 30mph tail wind, it's just a matter of minuets to cover this distance. The PLs that stayed in Northern France, would of obviously breed a little earlier than our May influx population. So I recon that the 15 I witnessed yesterday, heading North like the clappers, could possibly be the start of the next influx.

i found a lovely group of fresh Painted Ladies yesterday enjoying Teazles at Gt Paxton ( the PLs not me, although i like Teazles... to look at ). Lots of Peacocks, a few Small Tortoiseshells, Meadow Browns & a single male Brimstone.

I've just walked a couple of miles around Culham (Thames Valley) this lunchtime and have seen at least 100+ Painted Ladies - looked to me like another influx as most were flying fast from the SEast, although a few had taken up residence on teasels and sow thistles. Interestingly, a few Silver Ys nectaring as well.

Can't we have a migration of something interesting?

I have a question. I was aked this before but did not really know. Do Painted Ladies use other thistles, other than common thistle to lay on? I was aked if marsh thistle was used, but I have only ever seen caterpillars on common thistle, not creeping thistle or any other, thats just as common as common thistle. Anyone know?

Was at Beacon Hill Rottingdean nr Brighton last Friday afternoon , Cloudy , had been raining , cool . I would estimate around 2,000 Painted Ladies on the Hill mostly in pristine condition . Meadow Browns , Gatekeepers and 1 Common Blue were also seen though unlike the Painteds reluctant to fly .

There were so many in my garden today that I stopped counting at 40. They were on every plant in the back garden. As I left the house to go out, I had another 20+ in the front garden
