At a tangent, I was reading in a magazine today about photography that you should always put the subject on the right hand side of the photograph as people scan from left to right when they look at a picture. I wonder if that is true for everyone; I shouldn't think so.

Hi Rob,

When you use any tag, such as "Foo", you need to ensure that the start and end are symmetrical, as in "[Foo] xxx [/Foo]".

And when you quote someone, you need to also include an attribute that is their name. For example, (I've replaced "quote" by "quote2" otherwise it will get interpreted!): "[quote2="Susie"]That's one hell of a photo, RobS![/quote2]".

Here's the result when "quote" is used correctly:

That's one hell of a photo, RobS!

To get that result, just hit the "quote" button, and rip out the pieces you don't want.

One of my favourite photos of the year is this one.
It shows (l to R) Paul, Me and NickB relaxing between butterfly sites during our excellent trip to the South of France in April.

Roger, i understand the sentiments. as much as i enjoy going to my deserted wood to be alone with the butterflies, meeting members at Denbies and Portland (and the workshop of course) has been a great addition to my year this year (with hopefully more to add fromthe events diary next year). who knows who a similar picture to that will be of in years to come because of this forum. by the way that sun and the beer look mighty tempting right now.

Great idea for a thread and some smashing photos.

This being my first proper season of attempting to photograph butterflies, I have so many favourites that it is hard to choose just one.

The Purple Hairstreak below is one that I keep coming back to as I think it shows some character and makes me feel like the butterfly was looking at me as much as I was looking at it

Neil and everyone else you can add as many as you like. I know i had trouble narrowing it down to just one so here's Another of mine (though cropped for detail here) is this gatekeeper. pretty much for the same reason as the skipper. the texture and the hairs and contours i think make it look alive. it's more than just colours (Like so many of my photos ) i'm yet to take peacock and red admiral that i'm happy with and trust me i have a load of both best viewed enlarged.

To be honest, I am not great at butterfly photos and didn't see a lot of butterflies to photograph this year, however I have this one, a common one, small white I found on this flower in a field along with hundreds of others and large/green-veined whites:

These are a couple of my favourites. The one of the Orange Tip on Honesty was taken in a fairly strong wind. I managed to catch it in a lull but I like the way the butterfly can be seen to be gripping the petal.
In the case of the Red Admiral it's the perfect condition and brilliant colours that does it for me.

I've been watching this thread with interest and there have been some superb photos and some good memories on these pages. I love the sun and beer shot and wish I was sitting there right now.
Heres some Helen took in Switzerland this year. There were so many excellent photos but I chose these for different reasons.

The first two I have chosen for composition and artistic effect. Well I just liked them.

This Darwins Heath is not perfect but an attractive composition.

I love the wavy purple and green background on this shot of an Idas Blue.

This Apollo was great with foot passenger climbing around her wings. This shot just reminds me of an excellent holiday and meeting up with a great bloke, Mr. Guy "not so Mountain Goat at the moment" Padfield.

And this final shot was possibly one of the most awe inspiring moments of the holiday watching three plus Cynthia's Fritillaries hill topping and sparring in such amazing scenery high up in the Alps.
