Small Tortoiseshell unfurling proboscis.

Demonstrating that the proboscis is actually made of two half pipes, and is not actually a tube at all.

Fair comment, can't argue with any of that, it's just that that particular pic, and a couple of others, are ASTONISHING!! I'd be intrigued to know the stories behind them. The where, when and how- was it the result of pure chance, or the result of dedicated research and planning.

Ok, suitably encouraged, I had a look through my pics and had 2 or 3 to choose from. To go for the best quality image, or the most unusual subject? Decided on the latter, so here is a fairly poor image of a pair of Small Heaths- courting flight, or territorial dispute? Either way, it's just about the only chance you'll ever get to photograph these little critters with their wings open- unless someone has evidence to the contrary?
