Hi I'd just like to say hello to everybody in the group and to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading all your postings and seeing the photos. I've been a keen bird watcher for years and found it male dominated and I'm wondering whether it is the same with butterflies? Where are the girls! Cheers Gill

My 2 theories for the higher-than-average male membership is:
1. Many of the members are interested in photography, which entails lots of gadgets. And we do like our gadgets
2. Photographing butterflies is very much about stalking your prey, and it's the "hunter-gatherer" instinct kicking in
Cheers,
- Pete

I actually think there is a lot of truth in the hunter-gatherer theory, which explains why other pastimes such as angling are also male dominated.
Put in simplistic terms, in prehistoric times, the male role would have been to hunt with spears, while the female would have perhaps spent her time gathering berries, when not in the cave tending to the offspring.
The modern equivalent is that men photograph butterflies or go fishing, while women go shopping. When did you last meet a bloke who enjoys shopping?

I hate shopping so that theory is out the window...have you been the shops lately its full of blokes posing in designed gear and stubble!!!!!
I agree with Gill us girls have way too much to do. Girl power. We the back bone of the world.
I think the biggest problem is that the blokes hog the computer and cry when you want to use it

Oh please.
My other half thinks he has hunted and gathered if he has to go to the supermarket!
In some cases Women:
Stay home and look after kids, whilst hubby/boyfriend goes out and does his hobbies.
Hubby and wife go out together. On returning home hubby collapes in chair and annouces how hungry he is. Wife still on feet without complaint gets on with making dinner. Dinner eaten he pushes plate aside and says that's better and goes off and posts pictures and gossip on his selected forum. Wife meanwhile still has to wash up and clear away things which was used for the days hobby. Also has to iron and clean house before she can sit down. When she has finaly finished hubby is snoring in the chair!
For 9yrs I did MTB racing which was a male dominated past time, I still have to do all the things I mentioned above but I refuse to ever say 'I just don't have the time' which might be some womens cases.
Some people are just not interested in anything bar shopping and Tv. Both of which I detest.
Have a care if this is you!!!!!!!!

Gwenhwyfer and Lou, how well you know the men! When I read your postings, it could have been me writing. When we get back after a trip in the field, Alex spends ages going through his photos on the computer and I'm lucky if I get a few minutes before going to bed. Note the times of our latest postings, guys!
Cheers Gill
