Mild autumn has given problem

Post by Jack Harrison »

Problem with my home bred Orange Tips (larvae from my Sweet Rocket). The 25-or-so pupae have been in a box outside and in the shade. Now is my traditional time to bring them into the fridge so that they don't emerge too early next spring - tried and tested method over 50 something years. But one male pupa is coloring up. I don't know if it will remain dormant at around +5C or +6C but if it does emerge, then it clearly has no future. Maybe this sort of thing happens in the wild so warm autumns might be very bad for some species.
