Notes and Views - December 2018

Post by Vince Massimo »

In recent years November sightings of Holly Blues have been reported in the south of Britain quite regularly, but it is very unusual to get one in December. On this occasion a fresh Holly Blue was seen emerging from ivy in Islington, North London by Katherine Pogson on 23rd December. Reported (with photo) on Twitter https://twitter.com/KatherinePogson/sta ... 2775866368

A Painted Lady was photographed at Burnton Bradstock, West Dorset by Mark Rowe on 27th December. At the same time reports were coming in from Matthew Oats and others that 10 were seen on the Isles of Scilly. Reported on Twitter https://twitter.com/wanderingrowe/statu ... 4663281665. Such winter migrations by this butterfly are not unusual, but are always noteworthy.
