Erebia for ID

Post by David M »

This erebia is from 2750m in the French Alps in July. Whilst pluto is common in this location, the undersides look a little strange to me.

Form erynis is what gorge would be in this location but again, I'm not happy with this alternative.

Anyone any suggestions?

Hi David
I am not an Erebia specialist but in my eyes it looks quit good for a E. gorge :)

It certainly doesn't look like the pluto undersides I've seen, John, but given that I've never recorded gorge I'm reluctant to commit. :(

My instant reaction is also gorge. The paleness of the underside suggests a female. My books don't illustrate a female erynnis but I presume the form exists in this sex and if it does, this is what I would expect it to look like.

Thank you, Guy. Gorge DOES fly here although I have hitherto never knowingly seen it.
