Thanks Guy. I'll go back to my book and study this one more closely.

ID Corsican butterflies
Can some one ID these butterflies please. The photos were taken two weeks ago in Corsica. Photo number 2 and 3 are of the same individual showing upper and underside. Photo 1 is a different individual but of the same species - I think. Photo 4 has different underside patterning which may indicate a ...

Re: ID required
A European butterfly, the Greenish Black Tip, is a possibility although this would make it an extremely unusual sighting. This species is normally found in North Africa and Southern Spain.

Re: St. Lucia butterfly ID's
Difficult to see what else the yellow streak could be and it looks as though there is a faint hint of perhaps a similar mark on the other hind wing, or is it my imagination.

Re: St. Lucia butterfly ID's
Hi Guy Thanks for your time on this. What a wonderful trick to "turn" the butterfly, not come across that before. It shows that the banding and black spot correspond well with the Violet-banded Skipper Nyctelius. On the orange skipper. Do you think the elongated yellow mark on the hind win...

St. Lucia butterfly ID's
These photos were taken in the garden of the hotel during a recent two week holiday in St. Lucia. The first two I'm confident are of the Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanilla). Nos. 3 and 4 I think are of the Common Long-tailed Skipper (Urbanus proteus). No. 5 is another skipper which I have been unable...

Butterflies of China
I have just returned from spending three weeks in Beijing visiting my daughter who is living there. We were very lucky with the weather having blue skies and sun most days resulting in butterflies being plentiful. These are some of the photos I took and I would appreciate help with ID's. Photo 1 I a...

Re: buddleia diseases?
Not a disease but my buddleia are being munched by caterpillars which I think are those of the Mullein Moth. Guess I'll have one or two of these in my trap in due course.

If you are interested why not join the Garden Moths Survey (GMS). This is a survey being carried out in gardens all over the UK on a regular basis March to November. You can join the Chat Site and get the "experts" to ID your photos when you are not sure. Obtain details from Dave Grundy (d...

I think you will find that "commercial" rubbish is charged by the cubic yard* * (Edit: for those who are into metric - that's 9 cubic feet .... ) Just in case any of my maths students are reading this, 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. :D Guy PS - when one local commune started charging (quit...

Re: your favourite photo
These are a couple of my favourites. The one of the Orange Tip on Honesty was taken in a fairly strong wind. I managed to catch it in a lull but I like the way the butterfly can be seen to be gripping the petal. In the case of the Red Admiral it's the perfect condition and brilliant colours that doe...

Moth ID please
I think this is a Green-brindled Crescent but it does not look quite like the books show and I can't see anything of a white crescent where it's supposed to be. Can anyone confirm or otherwise please ??

Re: Moths for ID please
Thanks geneculata those are the sort of clues I was after. Although looking at the books there is an overlap. Rustic and Uncertain Jun - Aug and Vines Aug - Sept. What I had not considered was the peaks.

Thanks JKT. I'm fairly new to the world of moths and was trying to get some idea of what you guys look for to differentiate between species which look very much alike.

Hi Gary
Thanks for that but what characteristics lead to that conclusion rather than Rustic, Powdered Rustic, or in the case of No. 3 the Uncertain ???
