Re: July 2013
I would estimate around 20 males and about 10 female silver-studded blues active at the Bovey Heathfield site in Devon yesterday afternoon, most of the males looked fairly battered but the females looked fresh. This is a really tiny site located away from the main heathland and behind some industria...
Re: July 2013
I think that escapes and accidental introductios are probably more common than we realise especially with people often visiting several sites during a single day. I recollect one instances years ago after I had visited Prees Heath, when I got home I noticed a small butterfly fluttering around in the...
Re: July 2013
I paid a visit to Bovey Heathfield near Newton Abbot in Devon this afternoon. Modest numbers of Silver-Studded Blues in flight including a mating pair.
Re: June 2013
Spent an hour on Giant's Hill at Cerne Abbas yesterday afternoon, it was overcast but brightish. There were plenty of Small Heaths and two rather worn Marsh Fritillaries.
Re: June 2013
Mine was another visit to Odd Down park& Ride for the Small Blue and there were several in flight.
Re: June 2013
Playing about with a revived Panasonic FZ38 and snapped this male Common Blue on The Royal Terrace Gardens at Torquay.

Re: February 2013
I think that Orange Tip is one of the magical species mention by Lewington an Thomas as being impossible to find in the pupal stage, (another being the Holly Blue), I have actually found the pupa of both species fairly often (generally when I was not specifically looking for them!). The only comment...

Re: November 2012
Not a butterfly sighting but maybe a promise of surprises to come: I saw two Swallows hunting over waste ground near my home in Ashford, Kent this morning, 22nd of November! I think there were report back in the winter of 2010/2011 of a swallow overwintering in Cornwall and being seen up until the ...

Re: November 2012
Amazing that there are still Whites active at this time of year. Its an ideal place for a warm micro climate, south facing cliff, with recessess protected from the wind and able to retain heat. I guess this explains how Clouded Yellows manage to overwinter further east on the coast. I suspect that ...
