Re: Blue id
It was taken on the South Downs (Old Winchester Hill) a year ago in August - so it could well be a battered butterfly. I attach another image of the same beast.

Blue id
Looking back through some old images I took of butterflies (and thinking I need better equipment to rival some shots on this site...) I came across this one that I can't id. The orange antenna tips particularly threw me.

I was at Mares Hill, Witley yesterday and this butterfly landed next to us while having lunch. I can't make a confident id, what do you think it is?

Re: Final email from my butterfly weekend
Thanks Pete, Hooray - I am getting my eye in. How much longer will the butterfly season last for. In other words is it worth me looking to organise another trip while my children's enthusiasm is high? Also (off the top of your head) do you know of any good butterfly spots around Guildford I could go...

Thanks for your help. There were masses of battered and ragged butterflies about - The newly attached I wondered how it could fly (but it did!). The ones I originally posted were in the best condition.

Final email from my butterfly weekend
Hi All, My final email for now. Here are the last four images from my bug-fest weekend (my children and I looked at all small things that moved). I don't know if we got lucky with the number of species we saw in a 3 hour ramble/picnic but we saw 13 species and have 4 unidentified ones that may bump ...

Confirm identification by beginner
Hi All, Here are 4 butterflies that I hope I have correctly identified - 2 Common blues and 2 small skippers. My son will make a presentation to his class when he returns to school so I want to ensure I have got them right - I only started trying to identify butterflies this weekend... If I have got...

Hello All, On the recommendation of a bug enthusiast my two young children and I spent a wonderful afternoon on the South Downs at Old Winchester Hill National Nature Reserve on our own bug hunt. Whilst I took my children there to enthuse them about nature I had very little knowledge of the insects ...
