Painted Ladies,
Good numbers are now being reported here in Cumbria though mainly coastal a few have been seen inland.

Hi Pete,
Why I say amazing is that I have never seen more that 3 Wall on any one day and there were probably more than 23 as I only covered about 200yds, also I did not want to walk away from the paths and cause any damage to the plants that grow there.

First Painted Lady in the gravel pits at Bowness on Solway today also 1 Small Copper,1 Meadow Brown, 3 Red Admiral, 5 Small Tortoiseshell,15 Peacock and an amazing 23+ Wall Brown, also Large and Small Whites and 2 Silver Y Moths.

Well suddenly North Cumbria has burst into life at Bowness GP today 1 Large Skipper 6 Wall 8 Red Admiral, 10 Small Tortoiseshell 26+ Peacock and the usual Green veined and Large Whites, Meadow Browns and Ringlets. no sign of the 4 Small Copper that were there last week,Just waiting for the Painted L...

Went again this am rain due heavy cloud and a breeze and only 12degs and still found 8 Small Blue, 4 Common Blue and 4 Small Heath.

The Small blues were out in good numbers today as were the Common Blues and the Small Heaths only the 1 Dingy Skipper seen and I got my first Mother Shipton Moth.
The Marsh Fritillarys are out at Finglandrigg nr Carlisle.

Hi! all, Two wonderful things happened up here in Cumbria today, the first was sunshine and warmth 18deg, the second was my first butterflies of the season, 2 Peacock and 2 Small Tortoiseshell, The temperatures have increased from 5deg to 18degs over the last 2 days, but will it continue? Ian

A beautiful afternoon here in Cumbria but no sign of any Butterflies yet,though I have seen Honey Bees and white tailed Bumble Bees.

At last my first Purple Hairstreaks on my own patch, tonight I had 5 in flight and 2 singles. Lots of Large and Small White around with a few Peacock, Red Admiral are few and far between.

Brian, Sorry thought you meant Thurs when we were there, the most butterflies were at the top and through the wood to the clearings, Leighton Moss can be good though mostly birding from the hides, but you should try Wharton Crag, park up and go to the right along the wood, follow the path nearly...
